Beer Selection Makes Stone City a Standout

Our restaurant critic visits Romeoville's newest eatery.

Looking for a good dinner and some high-quality beers to wash it down with? Then check out the Stone City Saloon, Romeoville’s newest bar and restaurant.

Stone City is located at 721 N. Independence Boulevard, previously home to the Half Time sports bar. I visited Stone City last weekend and was impressed by their beer selection and efficient service.

I would describe the look of Stone City as “fancy sports bar.” According to my husband, it really has undergone an “Extreme Makeover” since it was Half Time.  There’s a lot of nice stonework, a huge bar and a large variety of booths and tables for your seating needs.

Stone City’s beer selection is the best I’ve seen in Romeoville. You can get your typical Buds and Millers, but they also have a wide variety of craft beers for reasonable prices. Two of my favorite beers, Allagash White and Left Hand Milk Stout, were both available for $5 a pint, which is a great price. Our waitress mentioned that you could also try samples of the beer, but I wouldn’t recommend going overboard with that.

I was impressed with the service at Stone City, too. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the beers and brought out our food and drinks with a quickness.

As for the food, we tried the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer. I’ve considered myself a spinach artichoke dip connoisseur for many years, and I have to say that Stone City’s ranks among the best—not too soupy and not too dense.

For our meals, I tried the grilled chicken sandwich (I will eat just about anything described on a menu as “served on a pretzel bread bun”) and my husband had a salad with spinach, mandarin oranges, chicken, and walnuts. I was not overly impressed with my sandwich; I thought the honey mustard was a little heavy on the honey and light on the mustard (of course, the pretzel bread bun was amazing), but my husband’s salad was absolutely delicious! I noticed several other entrees on the menu that I’d like to try on my next visit, including burgers (again on pretzel buns) and pastas.

I’m looking forward to stopping in at Stone City again, whether it’s for dinner or just a cold beverage on the way home from Montana Charlie’s in the summertime.

I've been to both Stone City and Mongos. In my opinion, Mongo's is in trouble. Stone City has done a much nicer job remodeling the interior, whereas Mongo's has put up a lot of plasma TV's and sports memorabilia, but has kept a dated looking interior (old tables, no booths, dated bathrooms). Stone City also has a MUCH better beer selection, more competent service, and a wider array of food. The only way Mongo's can compete is to undercut Stone City on food and drink prices on a consistent basis.
