Bank Robbery Suspect: ‘Did You Get a Lot of Tips on Me?’

FBI releases details of Feb. 2 PNC robbery.

The man accused of stealing roughly $1,000 in a Feb. 2 bank robbery borrowed his father’s car to commit the crime, telling his dad he was going to collect money he’d earned for plumbing work, according to an FBI affidavit released this week.

Brett Timpone, 26, of Melrose Park, turned himself in to Romeoville police on Tuesday.

According to the FBI, Timpone surrendered after his father called the bank, telling the manager it was his son who committed the robbery.

Timpone is accused of entering the bank at around 2:18 p.m. Feb. 2 and passing a note to a teller.

“According to the [teller], the note stated words to the effect of, ‘Give me $1,000 in $100s, I have a gun,’” the FBI affidavit said.

The robber did not display a weapon, and told the teller to stay calm. After asking if he could also give the robber $50 bills, the teller gave the bandit $1,000, including three $50 bait bills, the FBI said. The robber took the money and the demand note and fled on foot.

According to the affidavit, video surveillance from the nearby Buikema’s Ace Hardware showed a white male wearing a black puffy jacket running to a black Toyota Avalon and driving away.

The man in the video appeared to be the same man pictured in bank surveillance photos released by the police immediately following the crime.

On Feb. 7, five days after the incident, Timpone’s father called the Romeoville PNC Bank and spoke to the manager, identifying himself and saying his son robbed the bank, according to the FBI. Timpone’s father reportedly told police his son told him he’d robbed the bank, explaining that his photo was on the Internet and he was being sought by police and the FBI.

The same day, a man called the FBI’s Chicago office and said he was responsible for the robbery, but hung up without providing further information.

On Tuesday afternoon, Timpone’s father drove him to the Romeoville Police Department in the same vehicle believed to have been used in the robbery, the FBI said.

According to the affidavit, Timpone asked the officers, “Did you get a lot of tips on me?” as he was being patted down.

Timpone was turned over to the FBI on Wednesday and is charged with bank robbery. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Good thing dad turned him in. I think the kid needs a spanking, at least!
